After a well received first season adaptation of the young adult novel 13 Reasons Why, Netflix announced that the story will continue with a season 2. As foreshadowed by the somewhat offputting sequel bait in the series final few episodes last season, this new season will feature an entirely original storyline apart from the tale concerning the suicide of high school student Hannah and one boy’s work to discover why. More story and cast details are being kept under wraps for now.

Image result for mass effect

The Mass Effect saga is one of the best game series in history. Expertly mixing storytelling as well as captivating gameplay, the games are pioneers in the industry. However, that’s not what makes them truly stand out in my opinion. Though the wide breadth of story is admirable, the sheer amount of freedom you are given is more so. Not just in physical exploration, but in social and personal form as well, Mass Effect gives you the opportunity to explore yourself in a way that real life may not necessarily allow or at least approve of. And that’s what makes it great. (more…)

Image result for the great wall film

There is a lot to be said for the case that Hollywood is, at least partially, unfair to the depiction of certain races. Whether it be horrendously stereotyping them or not giving particular races roles at all, history is rife with evidence that the film industry has been slow on being more diverse. When the trailer for The Great Wall was released I was personally unenthused. The CGI looked crummy and Matt Damon’s inclusion had no particular significance for me. I forgot about it and moved on with my day. But suddenly the internet was a flame, as it is prone to do, as others saw this trailer and were enraged that Matt Damon’s white male character was a seeming savior for an overwhelmed, Chinese majority army.  Though on the surface I can see where this interpretation would come from, I can’t agree that his character is by any means an insult to Asian races or acting as a white savior to any characters in this film. Why you ask? Because unlike most people I forced myself to watch the damn film. (more…)

10. Blade Runner (1982) – Before I saw the film, I played a computer game with the same name based on this cult classic. Actually, maybe it’s not much of a cult today, but most definitely a classic. Based on Philip K. Dick’s story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Ridley Scott’s film blends science fiction and film noir in a plot so perplexing,  you’d question what makes a human, and whether we are too, Replicants. Featuring the star power of Harrison Ford and a stellar performance from Rutger Hauer, the story captures a dystopian Los Angeles in the future, where androids become a threat to human life. It takes a hard-boiled cop named Deckard to execute, or as they call it, “retire,” the machines in human tissue. It is a dark, yet spellbinding picture that stands out from other great science fiction movies. (more…)

Best Picture?

Reviewed by Mason Manuel

In the wake of the recent Best Picture win at the Oscars, I was remiss that I had never seen Spotlight. Popping it in a week later, I was expecting to experience the same amount of exhilaration that I had with the other candidates. Starring an impressive cast and crew while tackling a very controversial issue, Spotlight has everything working for it. But while the performances and story are decent and moving at times, a film of the ages this is not. Though assuredly interesting and even anger inducing, Spotlight does not deserve Best Picture. That’s not to say it’s a bad film though. (more…)
